Dreadmoor demo guide: what the free slice actually contains.
A free trip from the Abandoned House to the far side of The Throat. Here is how to download it, how long it lasts, what carries over (nothing confirmed) and why your old playtest save should stay buried.
The demo is a complete loop, not a fishing minigame.

How to download the Dreadmoor demo
- Open the Dreadmoor Demo page on Steam.
- Select Download or the install button. The demo is a separate Steam app from the main game.
- Launch it from your Steam library. You do not need to own Dreadmoor to play the demo.
- If you played an earlier playtest, remove the old local Saved folder before starting. Back up anything you want to preserve first.
What is included in the demo?
The October 2026 demo is a vertical slice of the Early Access build. It includes the opening house, the Trading Post at Betsy and Sons, the Bunkhouse, the Dry Dock, Angler's Island, several fishing grounds and the waterway gate at The Throat.
- First-person fishing with stamina, line tension, peaceful and predator mechanics.
- The opening five-Snapper, three-Softgrazer and three-Harpooner contracts.
- Boat cleaning, hull repair, Hull Protection and the Upgraded Engine.
- Bait crafting, the Grinder, the Thresher and the Fuel Larva.
- A slice of the fish database, including Sea Blight mutants.
- The Throat waterway puzzle and the demo ending.
How long does the demo take?
The critical path is roughly one to two hours for most players. If you explore the salvage fields, hunt optional species, fill the boat upgrades and read the notes, it can stretch to three hours or more. The demo does not have a timer; the gate is the end, not a countdown.
The old-save warning
The developers explicitly recommend not continuing an older playtest save in the October 2026 demo. Old saves can trigger bugs or crashes. If you want to keep a save for posterity, copy it before deleting the local Saved folder.
Your demo progress is also not confirmed to carry into Early Access. Treat it as a temporary record. The catch log and walkthrough progress on this site are stored separately in your browser and are not game saves.
Demo vs Early Access
The demo is a route through one region, ending at The Throat. Early Access launches with the complete core loop, one major region and the original story, and is planned to expand over roughly 6–12 months. The demo is the best way to test the fishing feel, but it is not the full progression tree.
| Feature | Demo | Early Access |
|---|---|---|
| Price | Free | $19.99 |
| Region | Trading Post, Angler's Island, The Throat | One major region at launch |
| Story | Opening slice, ends at the gate | Original story content |
| Fish | 28 species in the demo data | Wide variety plus mutations, more planned |
| Boat upgrades | Required modules plus a slice of the tree | Broader progression during Early Access |
| Save carry-over | No carry-over from demo to Early Access has been announced | |
Stuck in the demo?
The full demo walkthrough covers every main quest, including the Moonshine Still materials, the Dry Dock fuse box, the three fishing contracts and The Throat. If you only need the gate, the Throat puzzle guide has the repair order and troubleshooting table.
Demo FAQ
Is the Dreadmoor demo free?
Yes. The Dreadmoor demo is a free download on Steam. It is a separate app from the main game and does not require a purchase.
How long is the Dreadmoor demo?
The main route takes most players around one to two hours. Fishing for optional species, upgrading the boat and exploring can push it to three hours or more.
Where does the Dreadmoor demo end?
The demo ends after you repair The Throat, open the waterway gate and sail through the passage. A Thank You for Playing screen marks the end; the area beyond the gate is not a playable continuation.

Is the Dreadmoor demo on Steam Deck?
Yes, the demo is playable on Steam Deck. The developers have continued optimizing for handheld play, and the demo can be launched from Steam like any other game.
Does demo progress carry into Early Access?
No carry-over has been announced. Treat demo progress as temporary and expect to start a new save when Dreadmoor enters Early Access on 9 November 2026.
