Field manual / first watch
Dreadmoor beginner guide: twelve things the swamp will charge you for.
The opening hour is not hard, but it is unforgiving about inventory. These are the habits that keep the boat moving, the contracts intact and the line unbroken.
The first hour is a budget, not a tutorial.
The core loop in five moves
Dreadmoor is a loop, not a straight line. Once you understand the five moves, most objectives become a question of which material is missing.
01
Sail
Follow the journal marker.
02
Fish
Match bait to temperament.
03
Process
Meat, scales, fuel.
04
Upgrade
Research, craft, install.
05
Push
Reach the next gate.
The twelve tips
Read the journal before you leave the dock
Dreadmoor's objectives are specific. “Repair the still” does not mean “find a key,” and “configure water flow” does not mean “start the generator.” The journal wording tells you which system is actually blocking progress.
Keep every contract fish whole
Five Snappers, three Softgrazers and three Harpooners are deliveries. If you process or sell them before the hand-in, you have to catch them again. Check the objective before visiting the Grinder or the shop.
Learn line tension before buying gear
A stronger rod does not fix greedy reeling. Pull opposite the fish, reel when it tires, and stop when the tension meter climbs. The Simple Rod can finish the demo; technique is the real upgrade.
Match the bait to the temperament
Peaceful fish take stationary or sound bait. Predators need a moving lure in a splash zone. Using a predator lure on a peaceful spot is a wasted cast, no matter how rare the bait is.
Check the fishing spot prompt
The prompt lists the species and the active water. If the spot does not list your target, move on. Empty casts are cheaper than wasted crafted bait.
Use the Hook Gun on everything
Floating barrels, metal containers, blue Bug Slime creatures and The Throat's blue pivots all respond to the Hook Gun. It is the most useful tool in the demo and costs nothing to use.
Keep a fuel buffer
Fuel comes from Fish Meat fed to the Fuel Larva, then transferred with the Fuel Gun. Producing fuel and filling the tank are separate actions. Check the tank before every trip to Angler's Island or The Throat.
Repair the boat before upgrading it
The Dry Dock sequence is fuse box, power, lift, pressure pump, water cannon, hull repair. Modules come after the hull is clean and patched. Skipping the maintenance steps does not unlock the upgrade bench.
Check module storage after crafting
Crafted boat components can sit in the Dry Dock storage locker instead of your carried inventory. Check there before spending a second set of materials on a module you already made.
Spend Torn Pages on the main quest first
Weak Hull Protection and the Upgraded Engine are required. Fish holds, spotlights and afterburners are optional. If John is waiting, the quest blueprint wins every time.
Process selectively
Sell whole fish when you need cash. Process when a recipe needs the material. Chromatic Scales and Jaws are the two processed materials most likely to gate your next upgrade.
Know when not to fight
Combat is real-time, and the water does not pause while you fish. If a predator is circling and your hull is already damaged, leave. A repair bill is cheaper than a lost run.
A clean first hour
- Loot the Abandoned House, take the Axe, tune the radio and sail west.
- Meet Gill and Bozur, accept the Essence and take the chest to the Bunkhouse.
- Repair the wall, sleep, collect the Simple Rod and catch five Snappers.
- Ask John about the Dry Dock, then gather Coral Fiber, Bug Slime and Metal Plates.
- Repair the still, get the key, and start the Dry Dock fuel and hull work.
After that, the demo walkthrough takes over with the Softgrazer, Harpooner and The Throat steps.
The mistakes that cost the most time
- Selling contract fish. The shop is convenient; the quest is not.
- Spending every Chromatic Scale on bait. Hull Protection and Rainbow Fin want the same material.
- Forgetting the Power Switch. Repairing the Dry Dock fuse box is not the same as turning the power on.
- Buying the Carburetor too early or too late. It appears after three Harpooners and still costs 50.
- Expecting the gate to open on one switch. The Throat needs machinery repairs and both wheels turning.
Beginner FAQ
What should I do first in Dreadmoor?
Search the Abandoned House, take the Axe, tune the radio and sail west to Betsy and Sons. Accept the Essence, take your chest to the Bunkhouse, repair the wall, sleep and collect the Simple Rod before starting the Snapper contract.
How do I make money in Dreadmoor?
Sell surplus fish at Betsy and Sons, prioritising predators and class 3 specimens. Keep contract fish and processing materials out of the sale pile. The Carburetor costs 50, so do not spend every coin before the Harpooner contract.
How do I get fuel in Dreadmoor?
Process fish at the Grinder into Fish Meat, feed the Fuel Larva, then use the Fuel Gun to transfer the fuel into the motorboat. Feeding the larva does not automatically fill the tank.
Do I need to fight in Dreadmoor?
The demo includes real-time combat, but the main quest is driven by fishing, salvage and repairs. Avoid unnecessary fights when the hull is damaged or the hold is full. The harpoon launcher, hook gun and axe are the tools the game gives you for the times you cannot avoid one.
Is Dreadmoor difficult?
The fishing fights are the main difficulty. They reward patience and tension control more than gear. The quest route is readable if you check the journal; most “stuck” moments are a missing material or an uninstalled module.
How long does the Dreadmoor demo take?
About one to two hours for the main route, or three or more with exploration and optional fishing. The demo ends after The Throat gate.
